I agree with Renee Hoxie's remarks about HARLEM especially her comment that it was especially suited for middle school (and high school). And it is good to have excellent picture books suited for middle school children. My experience sharing this with 4th graders, who had participated in a Coretta Scott King discussion group with me, was a lot of blank looks. They became so lost with the many references to people that they haven't learned about yet. I left the book in the classroom for several weeks hoping that children would appreciate it on an individual level. But very few even picked it up. I think HARLEM is a great book, I am just not sure it is a book for young children.
