I just finished reading Ella Enchanted ....I enjoyed it very much and was struck how much it reminded me of Diane Wynne-Jones's book How's Moving Castle which I also liked.
As for Wringer....my first impression was that it was not going to be relevant to our suburban children...wrong! The pressures of peer relationships are universal...I liked the boy very much, but was anyone else bothered by the fact that his character at times seemed older than a nine or ten year old boy?
