There Was an Old Lady...

Have you seen the version of There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly desigated as a Caldecott Honor Book? It was created by Simms Taback and published by Viking, a division of Penguin Putnam Books USA.

The die cut pages provide a perfect means for showing the repast inside the stomach of our heroine every time she swallows another creature.

The side action also contributes a lot to the humor and verve of Taback's illustrations. For excample, after she swallows a bird (how absurd!) one can read or sing the whole verse ending with "Perhaps she'll die." On the same page in the lower right corner one sees a cow saying "She'll leave us high" and a dog declaring "and dry." (Sorry, but it simply needs to be seen to be guffawed about.)

I'll leave some of the delights of this lively volume to others to talk about...

Who has used this absolutely delightful, if not distinguished, book with children? Even if you haven't used it with someone young, if you've seen it, what do you think about it? Is it distinguished? Come on, Caldecott Committee members and members of the Notable Children's Books Committee
- if you're tuned in and we know some of you are - you can share why it's distinguished or notable from your own personal perspective.
