For the first time in my career I nailed both the Newbery and the Caldecott winners. Where's the nearest race track? I read Out of the Dust New Year's day and as soon as I finished it I said I would be very happy if it won the Newbery. I'm also glad Zelinski won after three - am I right?- Honor awards. Now, if Jerry Pinkney can win the big one after all his Honor awards. I was also bowled over by the National Book Award winner-juvenile division Dancing on the Edge by Han Nolan. Another favorite of mine this past month was Leon's Story. Thanks to Ginny and Megan for sharing their favorites at the Wisconsin Library Association conference last November and steering me toward The Best of the Year.
