Thanks, Claudia, for sharing the outcomes of your grassroots Newbery
& Caldecott Discussion in Waukesha County, Wisconsin.

We know there are many other grassroots awards discussions going on around the nation; please feel free to report the outcomes on CCBC-NET between now and January 12.

We'll continue to share individual favorites of all kinds for all ages, too, between now and January 12.. After January 12, we'll discuss the books that won the actual ALA awards, beginning during that week with your responses to the Caldecott Award winner and honor books.

We'll send the schedule for discussing the winners and honor books for the Newbery, Batchelder & Coretta Scott King Awards.

Meanwhile, this is the season for "Best of the Year" lists in various journals, such as School Library Journal, Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books, Horn Book, Booklist, and Book Links - to name only a few. You'll find them in those journals and maybe even on-line.

The nominees for ALA/ALSC Notable Children's Books will be on the ALA/ALSC website and can be discussed on the ASLC listserv; and the nominees for ALA/YALSA Best Books for Young Adults and Quick Picks for Young Adults can be seen on their web page and can be discussed on the new listserv YALSA-BK, too.

Meanwhile, here are some other recent formal acknowledgements of excellence from particular perspectives:

1) 1997 Jewish Book Award (Children's Book category) source: Publishers' Weekly 12/15/97: The Golem retold by Barbara Rogasky and illus by Trina Schart Hyman (Holiday House, ____) given through the auspices of the Jewish Book Council

2) 1997 Aesop Awards (Children's Folklore Section of the American Folklore Society) for the most outstanding book or books incorporating folklore published in English for children or young adults (source: ALSC listserv).
- 1997 Aesop Prize winners: A) Earth Tales from around the World retold by Michael J. Caduto
(Fulcrum, 1997); and B) The Hired Hand: An African-American Folktale retold by Robert D. San Couci & illus by Jerry Pinkney (Dial, 1997)
- 1997 Aesop Accolades: a) Bouki Dances the Kokioko: A Comical Tale from Haiti retold by Diane Wolkstein & illus by Jesse Sweetwater (Harcourt, Brace, 1997); b) The Cricket's Cage: A Chinese Folktale retold & illus by Stefan Czernecki (Hyperion, 1997); c) Esther's Story retold by Diane Wolkstein & illus by Juan Wijngaard

Midst the thousands of books published during 1997 there are so many ways to appreciate excellence! Enjoy... Ginny
