Hello, friends: I know what K.T. means about all the doom-laden fiction this year, but here are a few anodynes:
Gail Carson Levine's ELLA ENCHANTED (HarperCollins) really livens up a familair fairy tale, and in the same vein, Kate McMullan's NEW KID AT SCHOOL (Grosset & Dunlap), which is the first volume in her "Dragon Slayers' Academy" series, puts a couple of wacky spins on familiar fantasy tropes. I don't think Tor Seidler's MEAN MARGARET (HarperCollins) is as funny as some reviewers do, but it's got its moments. For more mature readers ;) Dav Pilkey's ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS (Blue Sky/Scholastic) is a life-changer, and though it's not due out until next February, I think enough of Gary Paulsen's followup to PUPPIES, DOGS AND BLUE NORTHERS, which is called MY LIFE IN DOG YEARS (Delacorte) to run it up the flagpole.
Just a few that come to mind. Cheers, John Peters New York Public Library cf071 at freenet.buffalo.edu
