-Seedfolks- is clearly one of the best reading and sharing experiences I've had this year. (For those who missed my earlier gushing, please check the achieves.) But, I'm not sure if it will take the Newbery (notice one "r" in Newbery).

Other 1997 favorites (based upon my reading and sharing experience with kids):

-Hands- Lois Ehlert: I do have a few problems with the book, like why is Mom sewing? Dad fixing? But, after seeing the endless possibilities that pre-readers and early readers discover with this book, its just too much fun to overlook.

-Seven Brave Women- Betsy Hearne: Loved the story, wished the illustrations were stronger.

-Kennedy Assassinated! The World Mourns: A Reporter's Story- Wilborn Hampton: Maybe because this was such a pivotal event in my childhood, I like the ability to share the experience with kids.

-Snow in August- Pete Hamill: Okay, this is my pick for best adult book for YAs. And yes, I will not stop talking about it. But, when an 11 year old Catholic altar boy trades English lessons for Yiddish lessons with a Holocaust survivor in 1947 Brooklyn, Jackie Robinson isn't the only one who steps up to the plate!

Well, that's five books that I really liked this year. But, there isn't a number count? So, then I'll casually mention -The Tulip Touch- Anne Fine...not very funny/happy, but incredibly eerie and right on point!
(Thank you Janice Del Negro for leading me to this title...if you all haven't caught the book or reviews, the Deborah Stevenson's BCCB review is still online at: http://edfu.lis.uiuc.edu/puboff/bccb/0997big.html....oh do I love the ability to click to the URL in my email program!)
