Steven, thanks for mentioning "The Amber Cat" by Hilary McKay. I just finished reading it last night and I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of it. I'll just add that it was such a relief to read a truly funny novel for children in the midst of the year's grim offerings.
Has anyone else read any good humor they'd like to recommend? I, for one, would welcome an occasional break from 1997's stories of death, despair and abandonment.

I loved "The Amber Cat" by Hilary McKay. It's a funny family story that slowly turns into a deliciously mysterious ghost tale. The story-within-a-story structure is amazingly smooth, and it all fits together so perfectly. Plus she just has the funniest characters, kids and grownups both. Her kids are so fun to read about, the books don't really seem to need dramatic action or tight plots...but then by the time you're finished you realize meaningful events have been progressing the whole time (like Robin and his mom coming to terms with his dad's death). All four of her books are wonderful.
