First I'll tell you about the CCBC public service schedule during the next two weeks, after which I'll briefly announce four widely varied opportunities:
1) The CCBC will be closed between Dec. 20 and January 4. CCBC public service hours between Jan. 5 & Jan. 20: open Monday - Friday 9:00am 4:00pm. Closed Martin Luther King Day. Beginning Jan. 21, the CCBC will be open as usual: Monday-Thursday 9:00am-7:00pm, Friday & Saturday 9:00am-4:00pm. The CCBC staff will be in and out during the time the CCBC is officially closed, and we will be reading CCBC-NET messages. CCBC-NET is *not* shut down for the holidays!
2) When the CCBC is open, stop in and see the exhibit of Thirty Multicultural Books Every Child Should Know. This list is on the CCBC website (www.soemadison.wisc.edu/ccbc/). This book exhibit was developed in harmony with a similar (but much more elegant) exhibit of the same books created by Mary Beth Dunhouse at the Boston Public Library - Copley Square (November and December).
3) Words and Images: The Narrative Works of the Pinkneys is a stunning exhibit of works by the Pinkney Family: Jerry, Gloria Jean, Brian, Andrea and Myles. The exhibit can be seen between now and Feb. 22 at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, 700 N. Twelfth St., Wausau, Wisconsin. Museum hours: Tuesday-Friday 9am-4pm, Saturday & Sunday Noon - 5pm. Closed Dec. 24, 25 and Jan. 1. I had the privilege of being at this exhibit during its opening days. As a result of that experience, I recommend this exhibit very highly as an extremely fine example of an exhibit that welcomes children of all ages and their families. At the time I was there, the museum had already scheduled tours totalling 10,000 children! This exhibit curated by Jerry Pinkney has appeared in other museums, as well. The partnership between the museum, the public library and the Wausau area school districts is exemplary. For more details, phone the museum (715/845p10) or contact Sonja Ackerman, head of Youth Services at Marathon County Library in Wausau. (source: brochure, personal experience)
4) Jewish Short Story competition: The Assocation of Jewish Libraries in partnership with Pitspopany Press announces the sponsorship of a new Jewish short story competition for non-published authors writing for middle grade readers (ages 8). They are looking for humorous fiction of high literary merit with a positive Jewish focus, content and values. The winning story will receive $1,000 and will become the property of Pitspopany Press, and there can be three runners-up. All four authors will be invited to attend the Assoc. of Jewish Libraries Convention in June. Deadline: Feb. 15, 1998. For rules of submission and the AJL release form, write to: Hazel Karp, 880 Somerset Drive, NW, Atlanta, GA 30327. (Source: press release mailed to Ginny)
5) 1998 River of Words Contest: The International Rivers Network, the Center for the Book, and former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass have announced the third annual "River of Words National Environmental Poetry & Art Contest" for children in grades K. The contest is free and open to poets and artists 5 years of age. Deadline: February 15, 1998. For entry forms and contest guidelines, or to order the 50-page Teachers' Guide ($6 incl postage and handling), contact: International Rivers Network, River of Words Project, P.O. Box 4000-J, Berkeley, CA 94704 (phone 510/433p20; fax 510/84808; e-mail row at irn.org; website http://www.irn.org). (Source: Library of Congress "LC Information Bulletin," Oct. 1997, page 326)
