Paul Zelinsky's Rapunzel

It is now December, and ccbc-net has moved on from discussing picture books for older readers, but I just have to bring up Zelinsky's new version of Rapunzel (published this fall by Dutton). It is clearly not a picture book for small children, but is it for older readers, or for adults? As an adult I certainly appreciate the expertise with which Zelinsky adapted specific Renaissance paintings for the book. But with everyone
(here) exclaiming over it, I just have to ask, Of what relevance is all this to the value of a picture book? I do not mean this to be an attack on the book; the whole thing just puzzles me, and I'd love to hear what others think about it.
