The vote is in! Youth librarians in Waukesha County, Wi awarded the mock Newbery to Karen Hesse's "Out of the Dust". Written in blank verse, "Out of the Dust" is the moving story of a fourteen year old girl (and her family) struggling to survive during the bleak years of the Depression in dust filled Oklahoma. One librarian remarked that she had read the book "cold" and kept thinking to herself "her writing is so poetic". Only later did she realize she was reading poetry! The characters are strong, the plot is a page turner, and the language is simply superb. Mock honors were awarded to
"Seedfolks" by Paul Fleischman and "Sun and Spoon" by Kevin Henkes. The mock Caldecott was awarded to Paul O. Zelinsky's "Rapunzel" with honors to Walter Wick's "A Drop of Water" and "Ali, Child of the Desert" by Jonathan London, illustrated by Ted Lewin.
