I want to recommend another beginning (though not first level) reader as a continuation of a series that maintains a consistently high level of interest. It's Barbara Ann Porte's HARRY'S PONY. This story involves Harry's having won a pony in a contest, and of course he can't keep it in his suburban neighborhood because of zoning regulations among other things. The solution is thoughtful, and the thought process and suggestions from Harry's friends ring true. Yossi Abolafia's illustrations present a varied cast and add gentle humor.
