The first day Ginny mentioned Picture Books would be the topic for this month I started a list in my head of good reasons to use PB's with older readers. One, for the artistic quality of the illustrations or to start to discuss art, such as; Last Leaf First Snowflake to Fall, Goose, The Incredible Paintings of Felix Clousseau by Jon Agee or any of the books illustrated by Stephen Gammel. Two, to share a story that may be too sophisticated for the picture book crowd, many have been discussed but I would like to suggest; The House That Crack Built by Clark Taylor or A Game of Catch by Richard Wilbur. Three, the impact of sharing a PB that tells in a new way, a familiar story, ie. The Frog Prince Continued, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, Ciinder Edna by Ellen Jackson or the humorous, UGH! by Arthur Yorinks. Four, To spark the imagination and motivate creativity such as; many of M.B. Goffsteins books, Full Moon Soup by Alastair Graham, The Old Banjo by Dennis Hasely or Black and White by Macauley. Five, for the poetry, the humor, the history; The Armadillo from Amarillo and The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry or Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening, Robert Frost, illustrated by Susan Jeffers.
