In response to K T Hornings recommendation of The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, I say Right On!!!!! I was trying desperately to remember the full title, before posting it - now I can stop wracking my brain! I used it when teaching both graduate and undergraduate children's literature. I handed out copies of some of the pictures, and asked the students to write a short story to accompany the picture - before they had seen the book itself. (although they had already "met" Van Allsburg What an eyeopener. Most of them really "got into it." The interesting point was that some of my most "bored" undergraduates (often boys who needed a passing grade to play sports) were the most creative! We then compared what students had written with the text - and it led to some very interesting discussions. It also made a difference with some of them (both sexes) in how they viewed children's books. I can see this at the high school level also. I also think Polocco's
is ideal - plus most of P's. and Van A's books!! Enough for now!!
