When I discuss WWII I like to focus on the contradictions, especially for citizens of the U. S. fighting for democracy yet denied their democratic rights. So, I use books by Ken Mochizuki, Yoshiko Uchida, Faith Ringgold
(Bonjour, Lonnie), and Mildred Taylor (The Road to Memphis). I also use the nonfiction work, Red-Tail Angels by Patricia and Frederick McKissack to discuss the role of the Tuskegee Airmen and the desegregation of the armed forces.
Some other extraordinary historical fiction for periods other than WWII are books written by Mildred Pitts Walter (Second Daughter; and a wonderful book set in an island community off the coast that brings to mind Gullah culture), Laurence Yep, Joyce Carol Thomas (When the Nightingale Sings), Virginia Hamilton (Anthony Brown); and Walter Dean Myers's Glory Field.
I used Jip and Lyddie in several of my undergraduate and graduate classes. Most of the students were intrigued about the historical periods because they lacked historical knowledge about the times, especially slavery, fugitive slave laws, the sexual exploitation of slave women, and factory girls, etc.
