In the discussion thus far it serious picture books_Pink and Say_, the Tricycle_Star of Fear, Star of Hope_ come to mind when choosing picture books for older children.
As a new School Librarian ( k-8) coming from a Public Library Children's Room, I chose as an ice breaker to read aloud to 5 year olds to 10 year olds during their library time _ My Little Sister Ate One Hare_ by Bill Grossman, illustrated by Kevin Hawkes. Crown, 1996
It begins " my little sister ate one hare, we thought she'd throw up then and there, but she didn't." "My little sister ate two snakes, she ate two snakes for heaven's sakes, she ate two snakes, she ate one hare, We thought she'd throw up then and there. But she didn't" The accompanying illustrations are marvelously absurd and the little sister appropiately unconcerned by her cumulative feeding frenzy.
The older children practicaly fell over each other. Bill GROSSman get it, get it!!!
The younger ones chimed in apropriately. Laughed like crazy.
A reading teacher came up to the library looking for the book because it was the only book that had caught his pupil's attention.
I never get tired of it even after repeated retellings.
