I use both versions of "Sadako" by Eleanor Coerr. The novel has a different impact on the children in my 6th grade class than the one with illustrations by Ed Young. The novel stikes it home that this girl was the same age as the kids who read it in class. That is powerful and has provoked interesting and reflective discussions. The picture book is beautiful and the main reaction to it is sadness along with the pleasure of recognizing the cranes - which we make in class all year long.
