I was particularly interested in Violet Harris' comments on the inherent contradiction in a segregated army fighting for freedom in Europe. Another book which deals with this issue is Mildred Taylor's The Gold Cadillac, which I read to 3rd graders almost every year.

Her mention of Bonjour, Lonnie leads me to the books I too would suggest--everything by Faith Ringgold. Tar Beach also deals with issues that older students can more fully appreciate, including the contradiction of segregated unions working for the rights of their members. Students who love that book and Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky are fascinated by Bonjour, Lonnie and Dinner at Aunt Connie's House. They are particularly interested in the connections among all of Ringgold's works, and the books offer a wonderful opportunity to explore the psychological impact of her art.
