A most powerful picture book for older readers is Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco. It is set in the American Civil War. The story of the two boys, the compassion of the mother, the fear of the boy to return to the war and the separation of the boys at the prison camp - with the illustration reminding me of the creation scene from the Sistine chapel. A book in this category requires a level of sophistication and maturity not developed yet in a first or second grader. Two other books I would fit in this category are last year's Caldecott winner
- The Golem and "American too". The main character is obviously a girl close to teenage years. She is of an age where she is flattered to have a young man ask her to dance. The appearnce of the characters is well above the age of the picture book crowd, even though the format of the book is pictorial. Florence McElligott Rosendale Elementary Niskayuna NY fmce at aol.com
