During the season of "thanksgiving" I've used the book Way Home by Libby Hathorn, illustrated by Gregory Rogers successfully with 3-6 graders. The book's design, beginning with the crumpled paper endpapers and continued by the torn edges between the text and the illustrations set the stage for this story of a homeless boy. The story, told in staccato sentences, is about a boy named Shane who finds a lost kitten and takes it home with him. But the pictures depict a less gentle plot, a dark city, filled with dangers and home is an abandoned building. Each time I've read this book to children their is a deep silence at the end. It's effective with children who have much, but it touches even children who have little--here's a boy who has nothing.
