Well, I like ALL of Katherine Patterson's historical fiction (though I think she's even better at non-historical. THE GREAT GILLY HOPKINS is one of my all-time favorite books). Karen Cushman is a consistently fabulous writer of historical fiction as well (I give away several copies of Catherine, Called Birdy every year). But can I say something heretical? I don't like Scott O'Dell. Think he's kinda boring. And I think Lawrence Yep and Bette (Betty?) Greene are both kinda whiney.

Right now, I'm reading a wonderful book on the Civil War called With Every Drop of Blood by someone whose name I, alas, forget. It's really good--really sucks you in. And I recently finished a spate of Ann Rinaldi historical novels which were consistently good. This seems to be a very rich area of children's literature.
