To ccbc re Debbie Reese's concerns about Second Bend in the River: First, I have yet to read this book and do plan to, so I am glad that Ms. Reese has pointed out these culturally sensitive issues. One cannot separate the story from a culture if one is to be authentic, particularly in children's and YA literature. Unfortunately, some authors tend to make separations that are plain wrong, and to cloak their reasoning behind the facade that it furthers interest in the story. In other words, to heck with the culture, on with the story! This has happened in a number of books that focus on African Americans and when African Americans point out inaccuracies, the response is that we're too sensitive. Children's books still reflect the mood of society. So what is this author saying to us? Eleanora E. Tate, author
