Two fairly powerful books which are based on actual lives are "Across the tracks" about a boy separated from his family who survives WW2 and "The Stolen Years" by Ziskind. In one incident she sneaks out of a line at concentration camp because she sees someone she knows in another line and only later learns that the line she had been in had gone to the gas chambers.
