I looked at Eckert's Sorrow in Our Heart after reading Second Bend. His chapter notes refer to his reference to the romance in Frontiersman. Though I don't recall his exact words, he clearly stated that after looking through the sources that refer to the romance, he is sure it did not happen. The sources are a diary kept by Rebecca, and if I recall correctly, a journal kept by an uncle. It seems, when Eckert looked at these two documents, the romance was a part of Rebecca's fantasy, as recorded in her diary.
Thanks for providing this info to the list! It will undoubtedly be useful to those who book talk Second Bend with children. If anyone on the list does engage children in a talk about this book, I'd appreciate hearing their comments! You can send them privately to d-reese at uiuc.edu.
