The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall is a World War II book that I feel is very powerful. In the book, Westall shows some of the ways in which children respond to war as they begin to understand its meaning. It's an interesting book to pair with Dawn of Fear by Susan Cooper because both books show characters who must cope with their increasing knowledge and the emotional turmoil it brings.
