My all time favorite book for young people is [Quest for a Maid] by Frances Mary Hendry. It is about medieval Scotland. Every year my 6th grade students go nuts over it as a "read aloud.' They write to her in praise of the book, and it is the only one that you can find by her in the US.
Also [Circle Maker] is a wonderfully sharp, moving novel about a Jewish-Russian boy. Again, young readers become very involved in the story and are challenged by it.
