I was just considering the very question Ginny posed while re-reading parts of Lily's Crossing this evening. I interpreted the meaning of the title so:
The Big Lie that eventually leads to amajor change in Lily's life has to do with her making Albert think that, with her help, he can cross the ocean to reach his sister. She makes a big step toward removing "lies" from her problem list when she confesses to Albert that she lied to him. When she does this, she crosses into a new phase in her life. It was so much easier to lie, and admitting the deception took a lot of courage. It took someone like Albert, who was so different from her yet so alike, to cause her to break out of the habit in which she had indulged as a sort of self?fense against loneliness. Only then could she appreciate the value of family bonds and true friendship.
