I have found that one book that touches children of all ages with some aspects of war that they may not consider is _Faithful Elephants, a true story of animals, people and war_ by Yukio Tsuchiya. If you are not familiar with this title, it tells of the animals in the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo that had to be killed, rather than facing the possibility that bombing might release them to run through the city. The size and sensitivity of the elephants caused them to suffer a particularly tragic death.
While the book can be read in a single sitting, its message lives long afterward.

Note: I have not previously posted on this listing, so I will introduce myself. I am an elementary Library Media Specialist in Madison, Wisconsin. I would like to thak all of you non-lurkers for the ideas and thoughts you have posted. They have given me much food for thought.
