Another lurker finally contributing... I recently finished Lilly's Crossing. I think it is a nice book, and I enjoyed it, but for me, it was not as compelling as other WW II fiction I have read. I do appreciate the fact that more WW II fiction is now being produced with sites other than Europe. I think it is important for students to get a feeling for what happened during WW II in places other than Europe. For the same reason, I frequently recommend Under the blood-red sun by Graham Salisbury. I thought his story featuring a Japanese family in Hawaii right after Pearl Harbor was very interesting. My other two most favorite ones are: The Devil's arithmetic by Jane Yolen and Good Night, Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian. I have a bibliography (from my library) of WW II fiction suitable for middle schoolers if anyone is interested.
