The Machine Gunners] has just been re-issued in paperback. It is not to be missed.
After he first published the novel, Westall received hundreds of letters from people who were children during the war. They shared their experiences with him which he then compiled and published. It is also good but I don't know how you would get your hands on that book in the USA. Another book that isn't available here is a collection of letters that young people from around the world have sent to Anne Frank. What I read of it was powerful and I never should have left the bookstore without a copy.
