The two Molly Bang titles that are most significant for me are her Caldecott Honor-winning TEN, NINE, EIGHT and her rumination on illustrating PICTURE THIS. I categorize TEN, NINE, EIGHT as an "Ah-h-h-h" book, one of those picture books that is so satisfying that an audience hearing it lets out a collective sigh of contentment at its conclusion, particularly when parents are in the group. (Two others are Vera B. Williams' MORE MORE MORE SAID THE BABY and John Steptoe's BABY SAYS.) PICTURE THIS is must reading for anyone evaluating picture books. She demonstrates in it how values like color and line affect meaning and emotion in illustration. It is completely fascinating and very thought-provoking.
