Personally, I don't think so. I think that he believed that by catching Eric, he would be absolved of his previous failures, but he wasn't. That is one of the ironies, which fits alongside Eric's prosecution for a crime he didn't commit. Everyone is punished at the end, with the kind of terrible guilt that is worse than a prison cell.

Someone said they thought Eric was going to die. Did anyone else get that?
 I felt he was going to agonize for life with his sudden onset of feelings and conscience.
