I, too, enjoyed _The Subtle Knife_, but don't think it would be in the least bit readable if you didn't read _The Golden Compass_. I really enjoyed a book called _Second Bend in the River_ by Anne Rinaldi that I reviewed for SLJ. It is based on historical fact having to do with Tecumsah and a girl that he had some sort of relationship, though no one is exactly sure what it was. Rinaldi does a lovely job of imagining what it might have been. It is beautifully written and a great romance story.

Has anyone read Patrice Kindl's new book, _The Woman in the Wall_? It is a strange one, and I would be eager to hear what people have to say about it. I can't decide if she actually decides to ask us to suspend our disbelief just a little too much.

Karen Hesse's book _Out of the Dust_ (not sure if I'm getting it exactly right) is another book I couldn't put down. It is a story about a girl growing up in Oklahoma during the Dustbowl. It is written in a series of free verse poems. Sounds scary, but it is very easy to get into the story bcasue the language is incredible. By using verse she frees herself up to use language that just wouldn't work in prose. The story is wrenching and I would be surprised if this book didn't garner some awards this year.
