For Ellen I have to come back in and say that I was sure that Rabble Starkey would win that year. Also, I find Jacob Have I Loved one of the most compelling books I have ever read, but I did not read it as a child. As I mentioned before, I came late to an enthusiasm for reading. The first Newbery winners I can remember reading were Secret of the Andes and And Now Miguel. I liked them both in 6th grade, esp. the former. I have not reread either of them as an adult. Can someone who was at the preconference tell me how these fared on reevaluation as depictions of two cultures? Thanks, Melody Allen melodyan at dsl.rhilinet.gov
