Yes, it was me who loved the above?ptioned title and reread it many times. But, goodness gracious, I did not even check which edited version I read the last time. NOr do I know what version I read in the 1960s (yes, that's my grammar school decade).
In regards to this "racist" or "political correctness issue" I waiver from
"let the tone of the book speak for itself (and the times) and "this is absolutely disgusting." I mean, kids should be exposed to what was "wrong" earlier and what is "right" now...if that makes any sense. I suppose this is another issue until itself and maybe for another ccbc-net topic. Although, it certainly is a consideration is considering what makes a book a classic. But your point is well-taken and I am going to have ponder this while rereading -Hitty-.
Well, I'm off to the library to see the oldest version of the -Hitty- I can find and compare it to the one I have on my shelf. Anybody else have any recollections of this? or reissued versions of the book?
Karen...who also likes -Lucie Babbidge's House- by Sylvia Cassedy...might as well plug my favorites while I am here...anyone get a chance to look at
-Mommy Doesn't Know My Name?- I'd be interested in feedback on that concept book.
