I am a 5th grade teacher and we read RASCAL every year. It is always the class favorite. At the end of each year we do an informal rating and ALL the kids say don't ever stop reading RASCAL. I think the appeal is that kids love animals, and they all dream of capturing a wild animal for a pet. Even though it takes place during a time of "war gardens and rationing" they still relate to the characters: bullies and daredevils.

I also think because the character is their own age and it is a true story, it is very meaningful to them.

RASCAL: recomended by the fifth grade and me.
