My brother (James Hughes) just coauthored a musical version of "And now Miguel". It premiered in Albuquerque NM in April. I went out for the premiere and reread the book before I went. I think it holds up well. I do think the cover illus could be updated. The book is based on a real family. Apparenty Krumgold had made a documentary film of the sheep herding family's experiences, then wrote it as a book. The family still lives in the area described and my brother and cast members got to meet them and perform some to the songs for them. Far as I know members of the family attended the show and were pleased with the translation to stage. So, yes I do think it is and was true to the culture.
