Funny how this topic is forcing so many of us into the light! I was happy to see that Harriet the Spy was mentioned in the last post--a terrific book.
But I wanted to list a few newer books which will, I hope, be among the classics of the future. How about Sylvia Waugh's wonderful series THE MENNYMS? -- those big, sad dolls take my breath away. Then there are Brock Cole's fabulous books: THE GOATS and CELINE--both my very favorites for their characterization and language--they're about real kids--as are all of M.E. Kerr's books, especially the FELL series.
Also: NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH by Avi, which ought to be required reading for every high school student in the country. JACOB HAVE I LOVED, Katharine Patterson's most beautiful book. And along with Lois Lowry's 2 terrific Newbury winners I'd like to mention the book I like just as well if not better: RABBLE STARKEY.
Anybody agree?
