I wonder if anyone else in the CCBC-NET community had the same introduction to Charlotte Zolotow and William's Doll as I did: through the adaptation into a song by Sheldon Harnick and Mary Rodgers for the Marlo Thomas musical project, Free to Be...You and Me. I could sing every word of this song as a child (in fact, I still can) but somehow had forgotten that it came from a book until, as an adult, I rediscovered the book. The text of the book is somewhat different from the lyrics of the song, and I will always be thankful that Charlotte Zolotow allowed this adaptation of her work into a format that allowed it to reach even more children. Free to be...You and Me is still available, updated from its original 1970's vinyl to compact disc, and I plan to share both the musical and written version of William's Doll with kids for many more years.
