Thanks, Ruth, for your insightful comments on Charlotte Zolotow's influence as an editor. Other authors and artists who were lucky enough to have worked with her would no doubt agree with all you have said.
And, no, you're not "out of the game" because there weren't any CZ books around when you were a child (though it's hard to believe!). I asked for people to share childhood memories of experiences with her books simply because we are in the rare position of having an author who has been active for so long that many of us, now mature adults, can recall reading her books when we were children. Since CZ herself is frequently quoted as saying her books spring from occurrences in her adult life that stirred a childhood memory, I thought that this sort of discussion would lend itself to the type of "double exposure" CZ brings to her work.
But please feel free to comment on any aspect of Charlotte Zolotow's writing for children. Ruth has stated that CZ is the "Margaret Wise Brown of our time." Would anyone care to comment on this observation?
