Looking over my library's collection, I am struck by how well Ben Shecter's illustrations fit Zolotow's texts. Both his cartoon-like pictures and her words have that perfect combination of sassy and sweet. In fact, both achieve a combination that prevents the stories from being sentimental, but also keeps them from being "mean" while still having that edge. Could some of the longtime librarians comment on whether or not the books were controversial when they were first published? How did parents handle the idea of a book called "The Hating Book," or the ideas presented in "William's Doll?" Thanks! Penny Peck San Leandro Public Library, CA Pikly at aol.com
