My first exposure to Paul Fleischman was when my now 16 year old son was in third grade. His particularly terrific teacher had them all memorize
"Mayflies", breaking the class into two groups, and they performed it as an ensemble for a spring show. They did a wonderful job along with a peace song and a rap in their production. Later, after I had purchased the book, we had an evening with friends and passed the book around and just read them together for fun. It was great! Especially if you really perform them. The poem about the bee had some great bumbling language, if I recall. In regular conversation, I can barely tolerate when two people are talking together. But in these poems, somehow the multiple voices make such an impact on me, I listen that much harder. They keep pulling me in. I think they're just marvelous.
