        Re Ms Portalupi's query about whether _View_ can be read as fantasy, I think you'd really have to broaden the definition to do that. The Singhs do have pretty rarefied discussions, but they'd fit right in at, say, the dinner table of Ms L'Engle's Austin family--and Julian's sleight-of-hand talents don't seem over the top for someone of his age. Are these what inspired that student's thought? The Singhs do definitely Come From Elsewhere compared to all the other characters in the book, but is their past, or general tone, all that otherworldly?

(---and completely BTW, of the ten copies of _View_ on the shelf at my local Barnes & Noble, six featured an upside-down Newbery medal. Book collectors, take note.--jp)
