Neta Jackson, a Chicago area author, wrote a series of stories for young children called Loving One Another: Pet Parables. The stories are well done. One story tells about two cats, one "middle class" and the other living on the streets. The middle class cat is first afraid then feels superior to the homeless cat. In very sensitive, non-frightening ways, Jackson shows how the homeless cat cares just as much and as carefully for her babies as the house cat. She uses the non-threatening cat characters to address stereotypes of laziness or lack of self-worth that children may have heard and found confusing or frightening.

This doesn't deal with the whys of homelessness, but the spirit of the people. The book is published by Bethany House. The stories themselves do not have religious content. Jackson has "thinking questions" after each story which may or may not be appropriate for public school settings.
