I think it's important to remember that, like Asia or North America, or Europe, the continent of Africa embraces many cultures and countries with distinct histories, folktales, and literature. There are many nonfiction books that deal with the history of African nations; for a listing by country, and an indication of the many countries for which little or no information is available, you might want to check the January 1996 issue of Book Links magazine for Reading the World: Africa by Darwin Henderson and Barbara Elleman. It does include fiction and folktales, but lists nonfiction titles and audio and visual media as well.
