Hello everyone! I am a new member of your listserv. My name is Cathy De Leeuw, and I am an elementary education major at Florida State University. Currently I am planning an exciting unit about homelessness. My partner and I have a ton of ideas and are very excited about this unit. My favorite lesson so far is that we are having the children listen to the song "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins and reflecting on what they think it means. Then we will discuss how the song is about homelessness and have the children reflect again. When I first heard the real meaning behind the song the song became completly different to me.
Anyway, we would like to get the students working on independently reading several different novels dealing with homelessness. We willthen put them in literature circles and have them discuss the books and what they learned from them or what they thought about them. Currently we have found two books: The Family Under the Bridge by Natalie Savage Carlson and Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. We are looking for a few more novels. Any ideas!
Well, I look forward to paricipating in this group.
Cathy D.
