Eliza, what a fascinating and monumental subject you and Kate have undertaken. Somewhere among your three characteristics of community, interactivity, and access I'd like to see visual, which is probably implicit in all three (as is hypertextual). These days the visual component in books needs to be strong in order to attract and/or keep young readers' interest.

Also, in The Disappearance of Childhood, Neil Postman argues that technology, because it is making the same information accessible to old and young alike, is blurring the line between childhood and adulthood and that we're heading toward the "adult-child" (the person from 7 up). Your mention of Negroponte describing children and technology made me think of that.
