CCBC-NET Topics

During the past several weeks my CCBC colleagues Kathleen Horning, Megan Schliesman and I have had significant short-term responsibilities causing us to be more or less involved than usual in the CCBC-NET discussions. Probably quite of few of you have noticed that. Some of you inquired about it in private messages - especially after the focused CCBC-NET pre-announced discussions you expect from CCBC-NET have become more scattered than usual. I will take responsibility for the recent lack of oversight. I will also take try now to get our CCBC-NET discussion back into focus.

1) During April we are discussing elements and examples of Radical Change in Children's Books as described by Megan Schliesman and interpreted by Eliza Dresang in messages posted within the past seven days. We will continue this discussion throughout April. Please refer to Megan's message (posted twice) listing books exemplary of Radical Change and respond by discussing any of these books (except Bull Run: see #3 below.) Please respond to William Teale's solid questions and Eliza Dresang's fine commentary, as well.

2) Please continue all other discussion threads begun with questions by responding *only* to that person, not to the entire CCBC-NET community. We always recommend that individual questions about certain books, books for certain assignments, etc., be taken to the listservs that specialize in that valuable type of brainstorming it's just not what CCBC-NET provides. Take advantange of what CCBC-NET is, and we'll try to make sure the general focus is maintained.

3) During May we'll discuss books by Paul Fleischman, including Bull Run, Make A Joyful Noise and many other books by this versatile author. During the last week of May, we invite commentary from anyone who has read Paul Fleischman's newest book Seedfolks (HarperCollins, 1997).

4) During June we will to discuss picture books written by Charlotte Zolotow, some of which have been newly illustrated during the recent decade due to Ms. Zolotow's strong texts.

5) During July we want to examine children's books that have stood the test of time, i.e., "classics." In your estimation, which books published before 1970 have stood the test of time? What if we asked the same question saying "before 1950?" What books would come to mind if we asked "before 1930?" We're giving you some time to think about this question. We hope you will not rely upon memory but will choose between now and July to re-read a long-time favorite book you now think has stood the test of time, in order to tell the CCBC-NET community whether it has or has not, and why - in your opinion.

6) We will post CCBC-NET discussion topics for the following three months each month at the beginning of the month. At that time, we'll also make announcements that might be of interest to the CCBC-NET community.

We've missed the usual CCBC-NET discussions, too. Yes, we're still here! Will you participate? Rob Reid said it so well a couple of months ago when we were deliberately holding back on our end to see if others will respond to each other. He realized that it's also up to each of you to enter actively into the discussion. And you did! Please continue now to examine some of the books given as examples of Radical Change or the concept itself. You don't have to agree with what you've read so far on that subject, but please do join in...

Sincerely, Ginny
