Dear Cathy,

An old time favorite of children everywhere is the Boxcar Children, by Gertrude C. Warner (grades 2-5). A book I recently read (and loved) is Coyote Girl by Judith Lehne (grades 5-8). This book involves a girl whose mother is murdered and she is left with an abusive step?ther. She runs away to look for a great-aunt - which doesn't work out. She lives in a abandoned fruit celler with an injured coyote pup who she nurses back to health and becomes very attached to. Which reminds me of another good survival story - My Side of the Mountain, which involves a boy who is also living off the land by himself. I'm sure there are many others. Onion John is the story of an eccentric man who lives in a self-made shack and forages for scraps - lots of other issues in this book including tolerance. Good luck with your list.
