Cathy I have used Maniac Magee to explore this theme with my 6th graders for many years. Some other books (some of which I have read some of which I haven't but my students have) are:
Out of Nowhere by Ouida Sebastyian (sp?) about a boy abandoned by his mother in the desert who hooks up with an older woman abandoned by here husband (divorce if I remember correctly) and the home he "makes" with them.
Monkey Island by ??????? I think it's a well known name (maybe Norma Fox Mazer?). I can't remember right now. It's about a kid alone in the city.
Where's Home (haven't read yet) featured in the April Trumpet Book Club for grades 4-6. Description says "Aaron and his dad hitchhike from West Virginia to San Francisco, hoping for a fresh start. But without money or shelter, how will they survive?" It is authored by Jonathan London.
Email me privately at work (see below) and I will send you other titles when I return to school next week (we are currently on spring break).
